Allen’s Strengths:

You’ve probably heard of players whose range is “in the gym.”  The moment they step on the court they are seemingly capable of hitting from everywhere.  Crabbe is such a player, and not just from three point land too.  Crabbe is a good mid-range shooter as well and is excellent coming off a screens, shooting 48.1% on shots off screens, the highest of any player with at least 100 such attempts in the draft this year.  Crabbe also possesses decent size for his position and is a good rebounder for someone in his role.  On defense, he is a good enough defender, nothing special but certainly capable of guarding most players reasonably well.  Still, if he is going to be a high impact player, it will come on offense as he can score points in bunches, something Portland certainly could use off the bench.

Allen’s Weaknesses:

While Crabbe can score points in bunches, he can also stop an offense could if he is having an off night.  His percentages from three point territory dropped every year, from 40% his freshman year to 35% this past season.  Some of this might be due to Crabbe being the focus of Cal’s offense, something he will not likely be in Portland but, as we know with Jamal Crawford, it could also be a sign of a player that sometimes doesn’t know when to stop shooting.  Additionally, Crabbe doesn’t have explosive athleticism, and the ability to get to the rim he had in college is likely to be limited in the NBA as a result.  Still, used properly Crabbe can be a very effective bench scorer and someone who could be around Portland for a long time.

Blazer Connections:

Did You Know?:

With Kidd’s retirement, Crabbe is only one of two active NBA players from Cal, the other is Ryan Anderson.

Crabbe scored 607 points last season, the 7th highest single-season total in Cal history.

Crabbe’s grandfather is Frederick KC Price, founder of the Crenshaw Christian Center in South Los Angeles, CA, the site of the “Faithdome”, the  largest dome church in the United States, seating more than 10,000 people.
