Chapter 1: The Assignment
The moment she stepped into my office I knew she'd be trouble. Standing 6'0", she had legs as long as the Mississippi River and a face that could melt a grilled cheese sandwich from across the room. After we stared at each other for a few moments of uncomfortable silence, I could just tell something was troubling her.
After taking one long, final pull on my coffin nail before ending its life in an ashtray, I said: "How can I help you ma'am? The name's Marlowe, Jake Marlowe."
"I have a problem."
"I think something fishy is going on at my workplace..." CRACK! went the sound of thunder and lightning at the window; just another typical "nor’easter" in December.
"I see." I stood up and walked over to the fireplace to stoke the flames. "Want something to drink?"
"No, I'm fine," her voice cracked.
The last drops of the cheap bourbon whiskey I bought from my favorite bootlegger spilled into my glass like LeBron’s tears @ www.lebroncry.com.
She continued: “Listen, I can’t talk for long, but I believe there’s a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top.”
“To the top?”
“To the top.” CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! Goddamn I was going to need to get that broken cuckoo clock replaced. “Oh no, it’s 9?? I have to run or my boss, David, will ask where I’ve been.”
She left shortly there afterwards with little consequence, leaving the scent of her perfume but no trace of her identity other than her last name: Paul. I have to admit that despite the lack of details she had me more intrigued than a 12 year old seeing his first pair of boobs.
I stoked the fire, my girlfriend had kicked me out of the apartment yet again, so keeping my office warm and habitable was of utmost importance. I took my last swig of bourbon and decided to call it a night.
I had no idea what I was in for or what it would take, but my hunch was that just like my cheap bourbon, I was going to have to put Big David’s operation on ice.
