Coming in live from Sölden, Austria reporting on the first world cup ski weekend of the new season.
Saturday, Women’s Giant Slalom
1. Lara Gut (SWI) winning her first giant slalom
2. Kathrin Zettel (AUT)
3. Viktoria Rebensburg (GER)
5 Tina Weirather (LIE) with her best result in giant slalom so far after suffering 4 or 5 ACL injuries. Nice for her and giving hope to all knee surgery patients.
6 Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), America’s new ski darling who screwed up a better first run a little bit (and has better chances in the slalom anyway)
10 Marie-Michele Gagnon (CAN) for our friends up north (no other Canadian qualified for second run)
18 Tina Maze (SLO), last year’s dominating world cup winner setting a new all-time record for most points by both men and women not in prime shape yet
27 Julia Mancuso (USA), fresh off separating with her Norwegian boyfriend and fellow top skier Aksel Lund Svindal after trying to live together for 3 months in Hawaii. I blame Tom.
Lindsey Vonn DNS, seen her there training on ski but she postponed her comeback to Beaver Creek, Colorado, giving her another month to rehab from her gruesome knee reconstruction. And her goal are the Olympics anyway. Don’t think Tiger was in attendance.
Tomorrow is Men’s Giant Slalom with the comeback of Bode Miller, though others have better chances at a podium.
