Robin’s Strengths:

Sometimes all you need in the NBA, as in life, is a new start with a fresh organization.  Such was the case for Robin Lopez last season, who took to his new life in New Orleans with abandon, and turned a career that had been viewed as perhaps disappointing into one that was at least, if nothing else, solid.  A full time starter for the first time in his career last season, Lopez posted career bests in every single category.  He was lethal around the basket, converting 53.4% of his attempts, good enough for 15th in the NBA.  Lopez does a good job drawing fouls as well and shoots, for centers, a solid 73% from the line for his career.  On defense, he is a solid shot blocker and a smart player who usually gets himself in the right position defensively.  Bottom line, Lopez is no star but he’ll be a solid player for Portland.

Robin’s Weaknesses:

Its probably a good thing that Lopez is good at defensive positioning because he is not that fast and often slow to react when plays change.  Lopez is not a great, or even very good, rebounder.  He grabs his share of rebounds but isn’t going to be able to consistently grab the tough boards that often decide a close game.   Lopez’s passing and post game are both improving but also need work.  Still, there is hope that the Blazers can find a way to limit these weaknesses and make the most of Lopez.

Blazer Connections:

Played under ex-Blazers assistant Monty Williams in New Orleans.

Did You Know?:

Robin and his brother Brook (who plays for Brooklyn) were the first set of brothers ever to be drafted in the first round of the same draft.

The Lopez brothers are not the first set of twins ever to play at Stanford and be drafted the same year, that honor belongs to Jason and Jarron Collins, both drafted in the 2001 draft (Jason in the first round, Jarron in the second).

Robin Lopez is a comic book enthusiast, and has been working on perhaps publishing some comic books co-written with his brother Brook.
