@Chris_Broussard Sources say Brandon Roy to announce medical retirement due to degenerative knees, possibly as soon as today@KBergCBSKen BergerSource confirms Brandon Roy today is discussing options, including medical retirement due to chronic knee injuries.Joe Freeman at the Oregonian: Roy made this decision, one of the sources said, after meeting with doctors on Thursday. After evaluating Roy’s knees, which have been operated on six times and no longer have any cartilage, the doctor flatly told Roy he should no longer play.“You can’t do this,” the doctor told Roy, according to one of the sources. “You might end up not walking.”
Update from Chris M: What is being reported here is that Roy will seek medical retirement. That means he would be inspected by league-appointed doctors to determine if he is medically able to play. He would continue to draw his full, guaranteed salary. In one year, the Trail Blazers would be entitled to have his salary wiped from their salary cap, although he would still get paid. The Trail Blazers could use amnesty to have the salary wiped from the cap immediately as opposed to waiting a year.
